Interview with: Dan Mutch (Khaya)
Location: n/a Postal Interview
Introduce yourself please.
Me writing this is Dan from Khaya, underground pop group from Edinburgh that has five boys and one girl in it. They could be called John, Richie, Pete, Greg and Caroline individually if that means anything to you.
Will you be releasing 'Fever' as a single because it's brilliant?
A lot of people like that song. It is a mystery to me, although I think it's a really good song live, it didn't use to be but it is now. That song I find it a struggle to listen to though I do like it. I think there's a lot of better songs on the album but people seem to like that best. It won't be a single. We will not be releasing singles off albums. We did that once and I felt too guilty about ripping people off. It was a lovely blue 10" vinyl though.
What's going to be the next release?
The next release will be an album called 'Avoidance'.
How have things changed since the last interview with us?
Everything's totally fucked up.
I saw the Melody Maker review of the album, what did you think of it?
I thought the LP was good. I was pleased with the review, I was pleased with all the reviews the album got. I think it was 'critically acclaimed'. I don't want too many people to buy our record though.
What other fanzines have shown interest/interviewed you?
Original Sin from Belgium is good to us. Apparently we're going to have a track on a CD done by some magazine in Spain. I suppose we got really good reviews in a lot of fanzines and magazines that I am grateful for. I've got a good scrapbook.
What is your favourite Khaya song?
That changes all the time. There's a song called Do The Thing on the new album that I really like. Also one called Rag. I like Husbands best live. On the first LP I really like 'Baby, Don't Bother' and 'Love and Whips'. Fuck it - I love all my songs.
What has been your favourite LP or single of this year so far?
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy album, and also 'Axxess and Ace' by Songs: Ohio. Godspeed's new thing is great. Best single I can think of is... there's been loads of great albums, in fact the Flaming Lips album is amazing and 'Race For The Prize' is a great song. I hate singles being released off albums though.
What's the nicest thing you've seen written about you?
'Skewered brilliance' in an early Melody Maker review. In fact, the recent live review in the NME surprised me.
Who are the worst band you've ever heard?
I've heard loads of shit. Our friends band in Dundee are absolute rubbish, but thethey're funny. Bands that copy other bands are bad. Oasis are responsible for some of the most hilarious bands i've seen kicking about Edinburgh.
