Interview with: Danny (Dune Rats)
Location: Via email
How long ago did Dune Rats form and how many shows have you've played since your inception?
Ummm I think it's out first birthday soon haha coming up in august so yeah it's gone by pretty quick.. I don't know how many shows but a few haha maybe... 40? 50? They've all been really fun!
I tried to do a bit of reading up on you and understand that the two of you have been in other bands..
Yeah BC is still also part of another rad Brisbane band called The Cairos where as my old band isn't around any more. DUNE RATS is kinda all I can manage haha.
Listening to Sexy Beach EP I can hear all sorts in there, The Buzzcocks, Wavves, The Strokes.. do you take any inspiration from these bands?
Oh man busted haha we dig all those bands! I mean Wavves is cool and we got that a little but I'd say a lot of bands around that scene in the states for the past 5 years have been influences also like Woods, Fresh and Onlys and The Oh Sees... I mean there's a fuckload of others too but yeah we really dig guys and girls who can write tight songs.
As an Englishman, the image I like to have of Australia is Sun, partying on a beach with loads of girls in tiny bikinis, surfing, drinking beer and smoking a zoot.. and your music seems to make a good soundtrack to it.
Nearly spot on haha I mean if you have the party with girls in tiny bikinis that's rad but that still alludes us...zoot is better.
What do you have planned with regards to future releases?
Umm actually recording vocals at the moment for our second EP Social Atoms in September..should be really cool, we have a bunch of fun people who have come on board like Berkfinger over in Berlin from Philly Jays, Tim Morrissey from John Steel Singers and Sean who's apart of The Last Dinosaurs.
Have you had much interest from outside Australia?
We didn't think we would even get interstate attention haha but the UK has been really cool. Our mates DZ DEATHRAYS took over some EPs and sold out and cool places like yourself putting up our shit has been awesome! We also have some nice people over in the US who have been playing us in NY and CA so yeah it's been fucking flattering.
What is Brisbane like for a music scene? Is it producing many other good bands worth discovering?
Shit yes! Maybe it's out home town pride but Brisbane has got a lot coming out of it at the moment like Millions, Last Dinosaurs, Slug Guts, Mitzi and heaps more but I mean just down in Goldy there's Pirates Alive and our bad boys Bleeding Knees Club who are cool dudes with nice tunes!
What has been the highlight of being in Dune Rats so far? Any totally insane shows?
Going on the road with DZ DEATHRAYS for... I forget how long it was but that was fucking fun and don't know what I can mention haha. Show wise, I mean the kids on the coast go mental and watching them is weirdly more fun than playing they just dont care.
